Coccidiosis. What is it costing you?
Coccidiosis is contracted when calves ingest coccidial oocysts from a contaminated environment. Although farmers know the typical signs of coccidiosis in calves, most are unaware of the damage that subclinical coccidiosis can cause. Where one calf in a group is suffering from clinical disease, the chances are that the others in the group have subclinical disease and should be treated as well.
Signs of coccidiosis are -
Diarrhoea, often blood stained, with mucus and straining
Dehydration and depression
Loss of appetite
Reduced feed intake
Retarded growth
Risk of secondary infections
Severe cases may result in death
Insuring against the risk of coccodiosis is a vital measure to enable a dairy herd to reach its productivity potential. Treating all 'at rick' calves before the onset of clinical disease makes good sense as it will improve the health status of replacement calves.
Baycox Cattle is an easy to use, one dose treatment for coccidiosis in calves. It controls the main pathogenic strains of coccidia found in calves, Eimeria bovis and Eimeria zuernii.
